백두대간이 통과하는 태백과 정선의 경계에 있는 고개를 두문동재(杜門洞峙)라 부른다. 문을 닫고 세상에 나가지 않는다는 두문불출(杜門不出)과 한자가 같은 그 이름처럼, 이곳은 세상과 단절된 오지다. 국립공원의 엄격한 통제소를 지나 숲으로 들어서면 이내 원시림 같은 태곳적 풍경이 펼쳐진다. 안전을 위해 만들어진 나무 계단을 따라 내려간 끝에는 거대한 고목나무들이 묵묵히 서 있다. 마치 한강으로 향하는 첫 샘물을 호위하는 무사들처럼 굳건히 자리를 지키는 그 나무들 앞에서, 나는 사람의 통제가 아닌 거대한 자연의 감시를 받는 듯한 묵직한 경외감을 느꼈다.

내가 한강의 진짜 발원지로 여기는 곳은 바로 이 고목나무샘이다. 현재 공식 발원지로 지정된 검룡소가 흠잡을 데 없이 힘차고 풍부한 물줄기를 거침없이 뿜어낸다면, 그보다 높은 곳에 자리한 고목나무샘은 그저 소박하고 겸손할 따름이다. 숲이 품은 작은 물방울들이 모여 흘러내리면 누군가 받쳐둔 대나무 통을 타고 졸졸 흐르는 것이 전부다. 하지만 이 한 뼘도 안 되는 얕은 물줄기가 기나긴 한강의 거대한 기상과 생명력을 잉태한다는 사실은, 작지만 위대한 자연의 섭리를 일깨워준다. 이곳의 물은 곧바로 강이 되지 않는다. 작은 샘물은 다시 땅속으로 스며들고 어두운 암반을 지나 묵묵히 흐르다, 마침내 검룡소에서 힘차게 분출되어 바다로 향하는 기나긴 여정을 시작한다.

이 작은 물줄기의 결을 온전히 담아내기 위해 작은 조명을 비추자, 정지된 듯 고요하던 샘물이 크리스털처럼 투명하게 반짝였다. 숲의 깊은 기운과 맑은 샘물을 카메라에 함께 담기 위해 나는 바닥에 바짝 엎드렸다. 렌즈를 통해 작은 샘물을 마주하고 셔터를 누르는 그 행위는, 거대한 강물의 시작 앞에서 자연을 향해 절을 올리는 경건한 의식과도 같았다. 고요한 샘물을 바라보며 겨우 술잔을 띄울 만큼 작은 물에서 큰 강이 비롯된다는 남상이라는 고사성어를 떠올렸다.

봄과 여름이 되면 두문동재는 온갖 야생화로 가득 찬다. 태양이 내리쬐는 화창한 날, 파란 하늘과 산등성이에 걸린 조각구름 아래 만개한 야생화 한가운데 서 있으면 마치 꿈속에서 나비가 되어 날아다니는 듯한 환상에 빠져든다. 여름에 보았던 그 장면은 시간이 지나도 잊히지 않는 선명한 기억으로 남아 있다.

화려하게 드러나지 않고, 가장 깊은 곳에서 조용히 모여 흐르는 아주 작은 물줄기는 바로 앞 숲속으로 스며들어 거대한 한강의 흐름을 만들어내는 진정한 근원이 된다.

The mountain pass on the border of Taebaek and Jeongseon where the Baekdudaegan mountain range passes through is called Dumundongjae. Like its name which shares the same Hanja characters as the phrase for shutting the door and never venturing out, this is a remote place completely severed from the world. Passing through the strict national park checkpoint and entering the forest, a primeval landscape from the beginning of time soon unfolds. At the end of the wooden stairs built for safety, massive ancient trees stand in silence. Standing firmly like warriors guarding the first spring water heading toward the Hangang River, those trees made me feel a heavy sense of awe as if I were being watched not by human control but by the colossal presence of nature itself.

The place I consider the true source of the Hangang River is exactly here, Gomoknamu spring. While Geomnyongso, currently designated as the official source, unhesitatingly spews a flawless, powerful, and abundant stream of water, Gomoknamu spring situated at a higher elevation is merely simple and humble. When the small water droplets embraced by the forest gather and flow down, all they do is trickle through a bamboo pipe someone has placed there. However, the fact that this shallow stream not even a handspan wide conceives the immense spirit and vitality of the long Hangang River awakens me to the small yet magnificent providence of nature. The water here does not immediately become a river. The small spring water seeps back underground, silently flowing past dark bedrock until it finally erupts forcefully at Geomnyongso to begin its long journey to the sea.

To fully capture the texture of this small stream, I cast a small light upon it and the spring water which had seemed motionless and still sparkled transparently like a crystal. I lay flat on the ground to capture both the deep energy of the forest and the clear spring water in my camera. Facing the small spring through the lens and pressing the shutter felt like a reverent ritual of bowing to nature before the beginning of a massive river. Gazing at the quiet spring, I was reminded of an old saying that a great river originates from water just deep enough to float a wine cup.

When spring and summer arrive, Dumundongjae is filled with all kinds of wildflowers. Standing in the middle of wildflowers in full bloom under a clear blue sky and scattered clouds hanging over the mountain ridge on a sunny day, I fall into an illusion as if I have become a butterfly fluttering in a dream. That scene I witnessed in the summer remains a vivid memory that will not fade even as time passes.

Without revealing itself in splendor, the very small stream of water that quietly gathers and flows from the deepest place seeps into the forest right before it, becoming the true source that creates the massive flow of the Hangang River.

고목나무샘

태백 두문동재를 지나 금대봉(해발 1,418m) 기슭 깊은 숲속에 자리한 고목나무샘은 한강 하구로부터 물리적 거리가 가장 먼 실질적인 최장 발원지이다. 현재 한강의 공식 발원지로 지정된 검룡소보다 약 400미터 더 높은 고지에 자리 잡고 있다. 이곳 고목나무샘과 제당굼샘 등에서 솟아난 물은 지하로 스며들었다가 다시 암반을 뚫고 뿜어져 나오는데, 그 용출 지점이 바로 검룡소이다. 다시 말해 검룡소의 물길은 이 상류의 작은 샘들에서 비롯된다.

고목나무샘은 사람의 발길이 쉽게 닿기 어려운 생태경관보전지역에 오롯이 숨어 있다. 희귀한 야생화와 원시적인 자연환경이 샘의 곁을 조용히 지키고 있다. 겉으로는 작고 소박한 샘이지만, 거대한 한강의 여정이 잉태되는 첫 물방울이 시작되는 자리이다.

그러나 이곳은 하천법상 요구되는 지속적인 유로 형성과 유수 조건을 충족하지 못해 공식적인 한강 발원지로 지정되지는 못하였다. 물은 분명 이곳에서 시작되지만, 법적 기준과 자연의 흐름은 서로 다른 방식으로 정의되고 있다.

화려하게 드러나지는 않지만, 고목나무샘은 강의 진정한 시원(始原)에 가장 가까운 장소로서 깊은 자연의 신비로움을 품고 있다.

Gomoknamu Spring (Ancient Tree Spring)

Located deep in the forest at the foot of Geumdaebong (1,418m) beyond Dumundongjae Pass in Taebaek, Gomoknamusaem is considered the physically farthest and longest upstream origin of the Hangang River. It sits approximately 400 meters higher in elevation than Geomnyongso, the officially designated source of the Hangang.
Water emerging from Gomoknamusaem and nearby springs such as Jedanggumsaem seeps underground before resurfacing through bedrock at Geomnyongso. In other words, the flow seen at Geomnyongso originates from these smaller upstream springs.

Hidden within a protected ecological landscape where human access is limited, Gomoknamusaem remains quietly surrounded by rare wildflowers and pristine natural terrain. Though modest in appearance, it is the place where the first droplets of the great Hangang begin their journey.

However, the site has not been officially recognized as the source of the Hangang because it does not meet the legal requirements under the River Act regarding the formation of a defined watercourse and continuous flow. Here, the reality of nature and the standards of law define “origin” in different ways.

Unassuming yet profound, Gomoknamusaem embodies the closest point to the true beginning of the river and holds within it the quiet mystery of nature’s source.
