모든 색이 사라지고 남은, 티 없이 맑은 하얀 세상

2009년부터 관찰해 온 한강은 보통 11월 말에서 3월 초 사이에 눈을 맞이한다. 해마다 편차는 있지만, 많든 적든 한 해에 대략 20일 남짓 눈이 내린다. 저녁이나 새벽, 혹은 한낮. 눈이 언제 쏟아질지 온전히 예측할 수는 없다. 그럼에도 태양이 눈구름 뒤에서 은은하게 빛을 내어주어 빛의 질감이 부드러워지는 오전 10시부터 오후 4시 사이, 그때 내리는 눈은 참으로 고마운 존재다.

나는 인적이 드문 고즈넉한 장소를 찾아 눈을 기다린다. 마침내 눈이 내리기 시작하면, 강물 주변은 마치 잘 짜인 드라마 세트장처럼 모든 번잡함이 지워지고 간결하게 정돈된다. 주변의 소음과 색채가 하얀 눈 아래 묻히는 순간, 세상과의 단절 속에서 오직 나와 한강만이 오롯이 남는다.

Since 2009, I have been observing the winters along the Han River. From late November to early March, the river usually receives snow. Each year varies, but there are roughly twenty days of snowfall over the course of the winter.

Snow may arrive in the evening, at dawn, or in the middle of the day. It is impossible to predict exactly when it will begin. Yet the snowfall that comes between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.—when the sun glows softly behind the snow clouds and the quality of light becomes gentle—is always something I welcome.

I search for quiet places away from people and wait for the snow to come. When it finally begins to fall, the landscape around the river changes completely. Like a carefully arranged stage set, the clutter of the world disappears and the scene becomes simple and composed.

As surrounding sounds and colors sink beneath the white snow, the world seems to fall away. In that quiet separation, only the Han River and I remain.
